Dot grid paper

Dot grid paper replaces lines with small dots at each intersection. You get the structure of graph paper for aligning text and drawing boxes, but the page stays clean once you write or sketch on it.

Example: a bullet journal week

Day boxes are four dots wide, and habit squares are one dot space each, so everything lines up without pencil guidelines. Once inked, the dots fade into the background and the page looks like a clean design rather than graph paper.

Why people choose dots

Bullet journals made 5 mm dot grid famous: dots guide headings, calendars and habit trackers without dominating the page. Designers use dotted paper for wireframes and UI sketches, and teachers use it for geometry, drawing shapes and practicing letter heights.

Because dots take up less ink than lines, dotted pages also look lighter when photocopied.

Spacing and dot size

5 mm spacing matches most dotted notebooks; 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) is common in the US. Increase dot size for printers that print faintly, and use a bold dot every 5 squares if you want visual blocks. A4 holds 39 × 57 spaces at 5 mm with 6 mm margins.

For triangle-based dots used in 3D drawing, see isometric dot paper.

Ideas for dotted pages

Use the dots as anchors: draw boxes for a weekly planner, columns for a habit tracker, or straight headings that sit exactly on a row. Because the dots disappear visually under ink, finished pages look like plain paper with tidy layout.

Dot paper is also good for math. Join dots to draw shapes with whole-number side lengths, explore area by counting the squares the dots outline, or play the classic “dots and boxes” game on a page of 1 cm dots.

How to set up a bullet journal page

  1. Write the month or week title across the top, two rows below the edge.
  2. Divide the width into equal boxes by counting dots—five boxes of four dots fit a weekday spread.
  3. Draw boxes along the dot rows with a fine pen and a ruler.
  4. Add a habit tracker: one row per habit, one dot space per day.
  5. Leave a few rows for notes and tasks at the bottom.

Dot grids for handwriting and lettering

Hand-lettering artists use the dots to keep letter heights consistent: capitals four spaces high, lowercase three, with the dots marking the baseline and x-height. The same trick helps students who want neater handwriting without the heavy look of lined paper.

Questions

What spacing is standard for dot grid journals?

5 mm between dots is the most common, used by most dotted notebooks.

Can I print dot paper in color?

Yes. Pick any dot color; light gray is easiest to write over.

Why can't I choose less than 2 mm spacing?

Very dense dot pages create huge PDF files and print as a gray tint, so the generator keeps dots at least 2 mm apart.

Can I make bold dots every 5 spaces?

Yes—set “Bold line every” to 5; every fifth dot in both directions becomes larger and darker.

What is the difference between dot grid and isometric dot paper?

Dot grid dots form squares; isometric dots form triangles for 3D drawing.
