1/4 inch graph paper (4 squares per inch)

Quarter-inch graph paper has four squares to the inch. It is the grid printed in most American “quad ruled” notebooks and composition books, and the default choice for school math, sketching floor plans and planning layouts.

Shown magnified: the square is 0.25 inch (6.35 mm). Every 4th line is heavier, marking 1 in. Lines are 0.35 pt thick, bold lines 0.8 pt—thin enough to stay in the background, dark enough to photocopy.

Each square is 0.25 in (6.35 mm). With the default margin, a sheet holds:

Example: a floor plan at 1/4 inch = 1 foot

The living room spans 9 squares by 10, so it is 9 × 10 feet; the bedroom is 7 × 5 feet. Doors are drawn as a gap in the wall with a quarter-circle showing the swing, which tells you whether furniture will block it. Because walls follow grid lines, you can redraw a wall in seconds and check whether a sofa (typically 7 × 3 squares) still fits.

Why 1/4 inch is the standard grid

A quarter-inch square is big enough to hold one handwritten digit and small enough to fit a useful number of squares on a page. That balance is why teachers ask for “4×4 graph paper” for algebra homework, plotting points and long multiplication, where keeping each digit in its own column prevents alignment mistakes.

The printable sheet above draws a slightly heavier line every four squares, so each inch is outlined. Counting along a bold line is faster than counting individual squares, which helps when you draw to scale. Set Bold line every to 0 if you prefer a uniform grid.

Using quarter-inch paper for scale drawings

At the common scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot, one square is one foot, so a 12 × 16 ft room is simply 12 × 16 squares. A US Letter sheet with 1/4 inch margins holds 32 × 42 squares, enough for a whole apartment floor plan; turn the page to landscape for wide rooms or a garden bed.

Woodworkers, quilters and model railway builders use the same trick: pick a scale, count squares, and the proportions stay correct without a ruler.

Printing it at the right size

Open the PDF and print at Actual size or 100%. “Fit to page” shrinks the grid by a few percent, and the squares then measure about 0.24 inch instead of 0.25. After printing, check with a ruler that four squares span exactly one inch. See how to print graph paper at the correct size for each browser and PDF reader.

How to draw a room to scale

  1. Measure the room with a tape measure and round to the nearest half foot.
  2. Choose the scale: 1 square = 1 foot fits rooms up to about 30 × 40 feet on one Letter sheet.
  3. Draw the outer walls along grid lines, counting squares for each wall length.
  4. Mark doors, windows and radiators, then add furniture as rectangles of the right size.
  5. Write the scale and the date in a corner so the drawing can be checked later.

Quad ruled notebooks and composition books

Most US “graph ruled” spiral notebooks and composition books use a 4 × 4 per inch grid, often with a light blue line and no bold lines. If you want printed pages to match a notebook, set “Bold line every” to 0 and print on both sides. For a binder, choose a 1/2 inch margin on the left so the holes do not cut through the grid.

Quarter-inch paper is also the usual choice for knitting colorwork charts with chunky yarn, tile and paver layouts, and seating plans. At 1/4 inch = 1 foot a standard 8 × 8 ft garden shed is just an 8-square block, small enough to sketch several layout options on one page.

Questions

Is quad ruled the same as 1/4 inch graph paper?

Yes. Quad ruled (or 4×4) paper has four squares per inch, which is a 1/4 inch grid. 5×5 paper has five squares per inch.

How many squares fit on one page?

With 1/4 inch margins, a US Letter page holds 32 × 42 squares and an A4 page holds 31 × 44 squares.

Can I get it without the bold inch lines?

Yes. Set “Bold line every” to 0 in the generator and download again; every line will then have the same weight.

What is 4×4 graph paper?

Another name for 1/4 inch graph paper: four squares per inch both horizontally and vertically.

Is 1/4 inch graph paper good for high school math?

Yes. It is the most common grid for algebra, geometry and graphing in US schools.
