Example: outline notes on college ruled paper
One line per point keeps an outline readable, and the 9/32 inch rule is tight enough to fit a whole lecture on one or two sides. Indent a level for each sub-point, and keep the space left of the red margin for the date, page references or a star next to anything the lecturer says will be on the exam.
What “college ruled” means
The name comes from the US notebook industry: wide ruled (11/32 inch) was sold for younger students, and the tighter 9/32 inch ruling for older ones heading to college. Today it is simply the default in most spiral notebooks, composition books and binder filler paper sold in North America.
A 9/32 inch line gap suits handwriting with lowercase letters about 2–3 mm tall. Compared with wide ruled you get roughly a quarter more lines per page, which is why it is popular for lecture notes, journaling and drafts of essays.
Lines per page
On a US Letter sheet with 1/2 inch margins and the name and date header, this page gives 34 writing lines, and 35 without the header. On A4 the same ruling fits two more because the sheet is longer. The red margin line sits 1.25 inches from the left edge, leaving room for binder holes and for question numbers.
If you need even more lines, switch to narrow ruled (1/4 inch) with the preset above the preview. For a looser layout, the lined paper page has wide ruled and custom spacings, and the handwriting paper page has dashed-midline sheets for early writers.
Note-taking layouts on college ruled sheets
Outline notes are the classic use: indent one level per idea, and use the margin for dates, page references or exam stars. If you prefer the Cornell method, with a cue column and a summary box, the Cornell notes template prints that layout ready-made on the same 9/32 inch ruling.
For maths or science classes, many students keep college ruled paper for written notes and 1/4 inch graph paper for graphs and working, so both sit in the same binder.
How to print college ruled paper
- Keep the 9/32 inch spacing, or pick narrow ruled or 7 mm above the preview.
- Turn the name and date header on for assignments, off for notes.
- Choose Letter or A4 and the number of pages.
- Download the PDF.
- Print at 100% / Actual size, double-sided if you want both sides ruled.
College ruled vs wide ruled vs narrow ruled
Wide ruled is 11/32 inch (8.7 mm), college ruled 9/32 inch (7.1 mm) and narrow ruled 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). On a Letter page with a header that is 27, 34 and about 38 lines. The difference between neighbouring rulings is only 1/32 inch, so the choice is mostly about handwriting size: if your lowercase letters touch both lines, go one size wider.

Questions
How far apart are the lines on college ruled paper?
9/32 inch, which is 0.28125 inch or about 7.14 mm, measured from one line to the next.
Is college ruled better than wide ruled?
Neither is better: college ruled fits more lines and suits smaller handwriting; wide ruled (11/32 inch) gives more room and is easier for younger writers.
Can I print it on A4?
Yes. Choose A4 as the page size; the 9/32 inch spacing is kept. For the usual European ruling, use the 7 mm preset.
Is college ruled the same as 7 mm lined paper?
Almost. 9/32 inch is 7.14 mm, so the two are interchangeable for everyday writing; the 7 mm preset is the usual A4 equivalent.
Why print college ruled paper instead of buying it?
For a few pages, a missing notebook, a worksheet with a header, or a non-standard size such as A5 or a tablet screen. The PDF also lets you choose the line color.
